activeCollab BC
We’re excited to announce that our activeCollab alternative is finally ready for prime time! We call it activeCollab BC since it’s obvious that the form emulates another popular project management system, Basecamp.
activeCollab BC is intended to be a one time offering of a Basecamp look-alike version of the free activeCollab 0.7.1. The download below is a complete installation of activeCollab with the necessary theme and core file changes needed to accomplish our Basecamp-ization.
Please remember that the underlying software is still activeCollab, not Basecamp. Hence, the features will not line up entirely. We simply made major enhancements that merged the look and feel of Basecamp with the feature set of activeCollab. This is not just an activeCollab theme! Many core application files were edited to combine Basecamp’s ease of use with activeCollab’s features.
We will also be releasing a new open source branch of activeCollab in the near future. More information will be posted right here when available. The new project will NOT emulate Basecamp, but will be an actual free continuation of the activeCollab open source project, albeit with a new name and enhanced feature set. If you like activeCollab BC, stay tuned, a new site for the project will be announced soon. UPDATE: As mentioned in the comments below, the full-fledged rewrite has been backburnered for now. Please contact me if you’re a PHP/Code Igniter guru looking for a great project to become involved with. activeCollab BC is still available for free download below.
To install, simply download the package below, unzip and follow the instructions in the Read Me file. Installation is exactly the same as activeCollab 0.7.1. Keep in mind that you will need a MySQL database and PHP5. aC BC has been tested in Firefox, Safari, Opera, and IE 6/7. Because it officially unsupported, we will not try to support other browsers. If you’d like to change the color scheme, you can find the CSS files in /public/assets/themes/default/ and may change hex values as needed.
If you have any questions, please contact us. We will do our best to respond.

June 1st, 2008 at 9:37 pmThe activeCollab BC “project” is “intended to be a one time offering of a Basecamp look-alike version of the free activeCollab 0.7.1.” There will be no further updates to it, though you are free to edit whatever you like in the code or CSS. There are a few minor bugs that have been reported, but most users report that it works well for their freelance or studio environment (over 300 downloads since I posted it).
The other open source branch of activeCollab has been placed on the back burner at this time (I will update the post above to reflect that). Ideally the new system would be re-built from scratch on Code Igniter and include a fuller feature set, including time-tracking, invoicing, etc. However, I am primarily a UI designer, so I have been recalcitrant to attempt this. My PHP skills are just average.
That said, if there are any CI/PHP rockstars out there that would like to get involved, please contact me. I am not opposed to working with a team.

August 30th, 2008 at 10:13 amDo you know if activecollab BC will work with ProjectPier? If not, is this planned at some point? activeCollab 0.7.1, as you know, is no longer being developed. It seems a shame that a project as cool as this be tied to software that has reached the end of its life.

August 30th, 2008 at 10:25 pm@Jonto No, since acBC is more than a theme, it won’t work for skinning PP. I developed this mainly for myself and one client who liked Basecamp a lot but was perhaps overly concerned about their data being hosted anywhere but internally. That was in the last quarter of 2007, while the future of the open source version of activeCollab was uncertain. I know there is much that could be improved, but I now use the software for every client project and it works well 99% of the time. I still have high hopes of developing a better system from the ground up or partnering with a developer so I can stick to UI.

October 28th, 2008 at 8:41 amwas wondering if you could ask for advice on any tidbits for scripts here. I love the layout and have been using this for awhile. I was wondering how do i make uploaded files in the display message section show up as thumbnails and not links. I want to set all files as thumbnails.
I am trying to make it look like this
http://cssglobe.com/lab/overflow_thumbs/
Not sure where or which file to load the scripts in. If I could get a brief start where to look it would be a lot of help. Thanks for any help

October 28th, 2008 at 10:15 am@Pendragon Try looking at the view files in application/views/files/ and switching out the icon img src paths with the actual image paths. Then, depending on how the script works, you might be able to just add it to the header in one of the application/layouts/ files. Disclaimer: it’s been over a year since I’ve done any work on this, and I’ve become used to better app organization, like in CodeIginiter. I think those should be the right file locations for what you’re looking to do. Make sure you back everything up!
