The (10+2)*5 Rule: Stop Procrastinating

Merlin Mann at 43folders described a simple rule for defeating the procrastination that plagues many freelancers. The process involves chopping your work into 10 minutes segments with 2 minutes breaks in between and repeat 5 times to fill an hour ((10+2)*5). It only works if you stick to it strictly. Really work hard in the 10 minute intervals and relax just as hard in the 2 minute breaks.

The result?

You’ll blaze through an hour’s worth of work/not work and will find yourself looking forward to both the breaking and working parts of the cycle.

Mann also points to a free app for OS X, Minuteur, that gives you a handy stopwatch to easily keep track of your work and breaks right on your desktop.
