Lightbox - controversial?

37signals’ Ryan Singer just made it so.

Designers love the easy to use image gallery script, originally developed by Lokesh Dhakar since it gives them an impressive way to display anything from portfolio pieces to personal photos. The technique, which uses JavaScript to open full-sized images when the user clicks the corresponding thumbnail, has been basis for spin-offs - notably Thickbox which allows inline HTML content to be displayed in the same way.

The question is: has the technique been overused?
